Welcome to my Class!
Did you know that the word villain originally had quite a different
meaning from what we have come to understand? Now we think of a villain as an evil bad guy to be feared, but the original word actually referred to a poor farmer. Interesting!
I love words! I love finding ways to use them better so that I can
communicate more clearly. I like to study words so that I can better
understand others who are trying to communicate with me. I love to find
ways to help students develop a real appreciation for words and become
confident users in all areas of language arts. Words are fun!
Besides words, there are other things I love. My family for instance. I have been married since 1986 to my beautiful and clever wife with whom I have four children. We enjoy doing things as a family and are very involved in our church.
We haven't always lived in the Modesto area and that would explain why I like none of the favorite sports teams. I come from Lakewood (near Long Beach) where I lived all of my life until 1994 when I came here. I am therefore a big St. Louis Rams fan (they used to be from L.A.), I love the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and, of course, I like the dreaded Lakers.
Additionally, I have not always been a teacher, and I think that is a big help to students because I have many different life experiences to draw from. I owned my own gardening business, I wrote sports for a major newspaper, I worked at a grocery store, and I worked for Home Depot.
Besides helping my wife with her theater things--she often acts and directs in local productions--I have a couple of pretty serious hobbies that I am very passionate about. I love photography and
technology. I love to take pictures of just about anything and am active in the Modesto Camera Club for which I created and update a website. I also love collecting old slides and negatives, so if you know where I can get some, let me know.
I begin every school year with excitement and big plans. If we work together towards the same goals, we will realize those plans. I am looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Bjerke
